1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die - As seen in March 2013
1) An Autumn Afternoon (1962 - Yasujiro Ozu) 7.5/10 - Definitely grew on me throughout the month and easily the best of the three Ozu films I saw.
2) Red Psalm (1972 - Miklos Jancso) 3.5/10
3) The Quiet Man (1952 - John Ford) 2/10
4) The Bigamist (1953 - Ida Lupino) 6.5/10 - This one is going to be borderline between getting an honorable mention spot and getting nothing. Very good, but was it good enough?
5) A Streetcar Named Desire (1951 - Elia Kazan) 8/10 - I'm still shocked that I took to this one as well as I did, after hating it for so long. My dislike for it in the past could work against it come TOP 20 time...
6) Chronicle of a Summer (1961 - Morin, Rouch) 3/10 - Forgettable
7) Trainspotting (1996 - Danny Boyle) 10/10 - Upping the ante on this one to a full blown '10'. I really had a great time with this one and easily Boyle's best work.
8) In a Lonely Place (1950 - Nicholas Ray) 4.5/10
9) Too Early, Too Late (1982 - Huillet, Straub) 1/10 - Pointless
10) Johnny Guitar (1954 - Nicholas Ray) 4.5/10 - I almost re-rated as '5', but this definitely wasn't even an average movie.
11) Salt of the Earth (1954 - Herbert J. Biberman) 5/10 - Surprising, but average at best.
12) Rebel Without a Cause (1955 - Nicholas Ray) 6/10 - Dean stole the show and that opening scene was great, but it was all downhill from there.
13) Bigger Than Life (1956 - Nicholas Ray) 8/10 - And finally Nicholas Ray came through with something to write home about.
14) Mediterranee (1963 - Pollet, Schlondorff) 2/10
15) The Travelling Players (1975 - Theo Angelopoulos) 4/10 - I'm upping it to a '4' purely for the imagery alone. Otherwise, not a great movie, by any means.
16) The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957 - Jack Arnold) 8.5/10 - Most fun I had all month - cinematically speaking.
17) Black Orpheus (1959 - Marcel Camus) 4/10
18) Utu (1983 - Geoff Murphy) 2.5/10
19) The Ten Commandments (1956 - Cecil B. DeMille) 6.5/10 - Not bad, just really long and sometimes tough to get through.
20) Night and Fog (1955 - Alain Resnais) -- - Still no rating for this one. Must see? Not really.
21) The Phantom Carriage (1921 - Victor Sjostrom) 5/10 - Went a little too much on this one initially. Good, but not stellar and I certainly saw better silents on my journey.
22) Marty (1955 - Delbert Mann) 7/10
23) Hiroshima mon amour (1959 - Alain Resnais) 7/10 - If it wasn't for my strict "only one viewing" rule, when it pertains to BOOK movies, I'd have rewatched this one immediately. I'm still intrigued enough to go '7', but still not sure how this film will impact the TOP 20 list.
24) Last Year at Marienbad (1961 - Alain Resnais) 6/10 - Dropping it one full point simply because I wasn't as intrigued with this as I was with "Hiroshima mon amour". I'm half inclined to not even give it a rating, because I really (still) can't make heads or tails out of it. We'll see what happens but it's unlikely that "Marienbad" will have any impact on the TOP 20.
25) The Smiling Madame Beudet (1922 - Germaine Dulac) 5/10
26) The Passion of the Christ (2004 - Mel Gibson) 8.5/10
27) The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957 - David Lean) 4/10
Well that's that for another month. Didn't watch any Non-1001 films this month and plan to hit it hard again in April. I doubt, however, that I'll do as good as I did in March, seeing as how my month is beginning with "Shoah" and "1900", two of the longest films in THE BOOK. Cya soon for that "Shoah" review...I hope.
